Fall Energy Savings

Who doesn’t like to save money? We clip coupons, shop during sales and look for deals whenever we can right? One area that people forget about that can save them a lot of money over the long haul, is finding simple ways to save money by reducing energy usage in your home or business. Now that the weather has begun to change and the trees are beginning to put on their annual spectacular show, it may be time to start thinking about how to obtain some fall energy savings. While we recommend a full evaluation of your HVAC system regularly to ensure optimal savings and energy consumption, there are some inexpensive and fairly simple steps you can take to maximize your energy savings this fall.

  • Use the Sun – Some rooms in your home may have optimal sun exposure during the day. Take advantage of the heat from the sun by opening curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Remember to close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.
  • Cover Bare Floors – Carpeting or rugs add to comfort and heat retention, especially if there is little or no floor insulation.
  • Eliminate Drafts – Old windows, outlets that are not insulated, thresholds that are uneven and foundations that are aging are notoriously drafty. Your goal is to stop as many places where the warmth of your home can escape.
  • Adjust the Temp at Night – Fall tends to have cooler nights and warmer days. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save about 10 percent per year on your heating bills by turning your thermostat down 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours. In addition, only heat the rooms you use during the day. If your kids are at school for 7 hours turn down the temp in those rooms.
  • Use Ceiling Fans – Fans can easily circulate the warm air throughout homes and businesses. Check the settings to be sure your have the fan on winter settings so the warmer air is pushed down.
  • Chimney – Warm air can escape up the chimney if the flue is open. If you are not using your fireplace consider closing the area off so that your heating doesn’t fly away.
  • Keep Heating Registers Clear – The warm air coming out of your heat register needs a clear path in order to do its job. Keep furniture, including chairs off the registers.

One of the best tips is to have your HVAC system professionally maintained. Doing so means that any issues can be spotted and resolved quickly so that you can continue to reap fall energy savings benefits!
